That
evening Hawaiian maidens gently laid fragrant pua melia (frangipani)
leis around each person's neck as they greeted Chaîne members arriving
for the luau and Mondial induction at Ihilani Resort, after which we
made our way to festival seating at the many torch-lit tables. The sound
of the conch announced the Royal Court, dressed in their royal colors
(gold for the men and purple for the ladies). The Mondial induction
team, in bright blue and red-trimmed robes and berets, followed them. |

During dinner there was a
surprise diversion—the clouds opened and outdoor diners were deluged
with warm rain. Servers saved the evening by passing out light plastic
raincoats with hoods. When the second wave of greetings from the rain
gods greeted us, we were prepared and welcomed it in good humor. |
