You are searching a database. There are three ways you can search. 1. You can search by state. Each state has a two letter abbreviation assigned by the US Postal Service. Our map shows each state's abbreviation. --OR-- 2. You can search by city. If you know the exact spelling of the city, you can type it in. If you do not know the exact spelling, you can type in part of the name and use wildcards either before, after or both. State searches have priority, so if anything is in the state field, it will show you all the listings for that state. --OR-- 3. You can search by Business Name. This is a bit tricky. It is very unlikely that you will know the exact name of a business and even the word "The" can throw you off. The answer is to use wildcards before and after the business name. Search Priorities, Why OR instead of AND: The State abbreviation comes first. If anything is in the State field, then whatever is there will come back. If you are looking for all the businesses in Chicago, do not put IL in the State field because you will get everything in Illinois. Same with Business Names, if you try to search for a restaurant name that you think is in Chicago and you put Chicago in the City Name box and the restaurant in the Business Name Box, you will get all the restaurants in Chicago. Wildcards: The wild card for this database is %. Wildcards may be used for City and for Business Name searches. Here is an example: You are looking for all the Hilton Hotels. If you just type "Hilton" you will get nothing because none of the Hiltons only have that name. If you type "Hilton%" you will get some Hilton Hotels because you have said "I want all entries that start with Hilton and anything can come after that." But if you type in "%Hilton%", then you have said "I want anything that has the word Hilton in it" That's the best since you probably don't know what comes before or after the name. |
