Young Sommeliers Competition

Announcing the 2017 Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Young Sommeliers Competition!

If you are a sommelier who will be 30 or under on September 30, 2017 (not yet 31 on that day), then the pictures on this page could feature YOU in 2017. The first-round test in the Chaîne’s 2017 Young Sommeliers competition is coming up soon, and it’s time to sign up to compete.

There is no cost to participate, and there are many benefits for the sommeliers who advance in the competition. The high scorers receive resumé-building public recognition, expense-paid travel to the regional and national competitions, and coaching/feedback from Master Sommeliers.  Those who place in the top three nationally win cash prizes of $1,000 or more.

*** In 2017 for the first time, all three of our highest-scoring competitors at the nationals will also win an expenses-paid one-week educational trip to Bordeaux, thanks to the CIVB and their generous support of the Chaine competition. ***

The first-round test of the 2017 competition will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016. Round One is a one-hour online written test that you can take from anywhere you have access to a computer. The top performers on this test in each of the U.S. Chaîne’s regions will be invited to compete in person in the regional competitions between January and April, 2017. The regional winners will then journey to Portland, Oregon May 17-19, 2017 (at our expense) for the national finals.

The Chaîne’s international competition will be held a year from now (September 28-29, 2017 in Budapest, Hungary).

To learn more about the competition or to apply to compete, click one of the links below.

Sommeliers who will not have reached their 31st birthday on September 30, 2017 are eligible to compete. The photos on this page show Sommelier Martin Sheehan-Stross of Michael Mina Restaurant in San Francisco, who was crowned the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs’s Best Young Sommelier in the World in Vaduz, Liechtenstein in September of this year.  Congratulations, Martin!
